Journal Quilts 2006

Here are the 5 journal quilts that went to Houston International Quilt Festival in October 2006. Each quilt measures 8x11.5 inches. A great size to work with. Nine JQ's were made in total, one each month between January and September 2006. A diary was also kept, below are the short summaries for each month.

The first two are featured in the book "Creative Quilting; the Journal Quilt Project".

For this series of journal quilts I gave myself the challenge of working mainly with commercial fabrics - often I use my own dyed fabrics but I am always buying these wonderfully colourful commercial batiks. Now was a time to get them out and use them. I decided to explore a Goddess theme. After all my blog title is Textile Goddess!

January

The Green Man is a common image with its combination of leaves and a man's face. This led me to think about a Green Goddess. The Goddess of life, of nature, of the trees and plants, growing from and of the earth. The red symbols on her body are inspired by carved rocks found locally and dating from many thousands of years ago. This JQ inspired a much larger quilt based on this design (Mother Earth, above).

February

I enjoy the challenge of working with metals and had recently read an article about painting metals so I had a go at this. The design was a detail taken from the January journal quilt. (I liked it so much I just had to use it again!)

April

Completed whilst on holiday in the Caribbean. The sparkling sequins remind me of reflection upon the sea. The piece was beaded whilst sitting watching the sunset. There was no set plan for the embellishments - it just happened.

June

Gaia mourns. Mother earth mourns for the destruction of her planet. The earth was printed on an inkjet printer, the label was coloured with Tsukineko inks. Wow! These inks are wonderful.

August

Three goddesses - the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone - equate to the three phases of the moon - new, full and waning moon. For this JQ I used accent beads for the first time. I wish they would stay on the fabric and stop falling off!
